Ryan Lee Crosby 01.jpg

 Ryan Lee Crosby

Ryan Lee Crosby's new album "At the Blue Front" (featuring Grammy nominated bluesman Jimmy “Duck” Holmes) offers a haunting, hypnotic meld of Bentonia and Hill Country blues. Recorded on reel to reel tape over two afternoons at Holmes’ iconic Bentonia Mississippi juke joint, the album was produced, recorded and mixed by Crosby, with a selection of original compositions, traditional repertoire and fully improvised songs.

Ryan finds deep inspiration and spiritual refuge in Bentonia, where he has been mentored for six years by Holmes, the man who is widely regarded as the last living master of the style. Blending reverence for tradition with a modern, trance-inducing approach, Crosby's process is informed by diverse influences that include Indian raga, ambient music and post-punk rock. For Crosby, all these seemingly disparate threads weave together through the meditative power of the blues. This is a trip back in time to the origins of the blues,it's raw, honest and authentic.

Bernard Purdie
The World's Most Recorded Drummer

Which musician did Aretha Franklin definitely NOT want missing from the line-up when she recorded her most inspired albums at the beginning of the seventies Who provided the back-beat for Steely Dan's "Aja", and for whom have Isaac Hayes, Donny Hathaway, B.B. King, "Sweet" Lou Donaldson, Joe Cocker and Hank Crawford reserved that stool behind the drum kit? The list is incomplete, it must be, because no other drummer in the last three decades has seen the interior of a recording studio as often as Bernard "Pretty" Purdie.  Purdie has laid down the beat on over 3000 albums to date.

Dave Keyes
Dave has played with some of the most important figures of blues, roots and folk music, having had long musical relationships with Odetta, David Johansen, Bo Diddley, rockabilly legend Sleepy LaBeef and gospel great Marie Knight among many others.

Chris Bergson
Chris Bergson is an internationally acclaimed American born guitarist, singer, and songwriter. “Chris Bergson plays the kind of guitar you can build a house on – it’s B.B. meets Steve Cropper meets John Scofield.” (ROLL Magazine) Hailed as “the New York street poet with a blues soul” (MOJO) and “one of the most inventive songwriters in modern blues music.

Ellis Hooks  is an American soul blues and electric blues singer and songwriter, who has released six albums to date.
The Allmusic journalist, Thom Jurek, noted that Hooks " touches upon Wilson Pickett, Sam Cooke, and Otis Redding, but feels like one of the gritty New York streets Hooks has busked upon.

Ty Mares 03.jpg

Ty Mares

A sophisticated guitarist, Ty Mares is known for his illustrative blues solos, characterized by colorful chord progressions, and his distinctive vocal style.

As an original artist, Mares fuses every genre from R&B to pop, as well as a vast array of rock, all wrapped up in the whirlwind of jam.

Originally from Denver, Colorado, Ty Mares was raised in a military family, and attributes his worldliness, adaptability, and work ethic to the constant traveling he did growing up.

From the age of 13, Mares has studied under principal pianists and jazz guitarists before spending some time studying at Berklee College of Music. No amount of study, however, compares to the time he has spent improvising on stage with Cosmic Jerry Band.

For the last decade, he’s made a name for himself all along the Jersey Shore and surrounding cities as a force to be reckoned with on the guitar.

He’s shared the stage with members of Dark Star Orchestra, the Fugees, and Dogs in a Pile, to name a few.

Susan Werner 01_edited.jpg

Susan Werner

“(Werner is) a songwriter and musician who is in such complete command of her gifts that it’s almost scary.”

— All Music Guide

“Susan Werner, a clever songwriter and an engaging performer, brings literacy and wit back to popular song.”

— The New Yorker

Over the course of her twenty five year career, Susan Werner has earned a reputation as “one of the most innovative songwriters working today” (Chicago Tribune). With formidable chops on guitar (she began playing at age 5) and piano (she was a guest on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz), along with a graduate degree in voice performance, her shows are a one-woman master class in musicianship.

Although best known as an acoustic songwriter that came up through coffeehouses and folk festivals, the Chicago-based artist has written songs in the style of Gershwin and Cole Porter (I Can’t Be New, 2004), gospel music (The Gospel Truth, 2007), traditional Cuban “son” (An American In Havana, 2016), and New Orleans junk piano (NOLA, 2019). In 2014 she composed the music and lyrics to the musical theater score Bull Durham, The Musical (MGM). Her songs have been recorded by Tom Jones, Michael Feinstein, and Shemekia Copeland, and her latest recording of originals, The Birds of Florida, took flight in 2022.

Shemekia Copeland

Shemekia Copeland returns to our stage at the Lizzie Rose Music Room. Her last concert was described as an evening like going to church and coming out fulfilled. Shemekia filled up the Music Room with her incredible vocals and provided her unique mixture of blues and soul jams. She is touring to support her new album "Blame It On Eve" and she played several jams from it including the title song along with jams from her other albums.  This woman can belt out the blues and melt your heart with a soulful ballad. Shemekia is already building a legacy and will eventually be mentioned along with Etta James and Koko Taylor as a female blues icon.

Award-winning blues, soul and Americana singer Shemekia Copeland possesses one of the most instantly recognizable and deeply soulful roots music voices of our time. She is beloved worldwide for the fearlessness, honesty and humor of her revelatory music, as well as for delivering each song she performs with unmatched passion. Copeland — winner of the 2021 Blues Music Award for B.B. King Entertainer Of The Year— connects with her audience on an intensely personal level, taking them with her on what The Wall Street Journal calls “a consequential ride” of “bold and timely blues.” NPR Music says Shemekia sings with “punchy defiance and potent conviction.” The Houston Chronicle describes her songs as “resilient pleas for a kinder tomorrow.”

Spencer Lajoye 01.jpg

Spencer LaJoye

With a coy smile, a wink to the back row, and carefree expertise, they spin their crystalline vocals through a loop pedal while strumming the weathered acoustic guitar they acquired for leading worship in high school. “I don’t believe in much anymore,” they announce to teary-eyed audiences, “except a little bit of everything. And you. And me. And that art can change the world simply by making us feel something.”

LaJoye is a coast-to-coast singer/songwriter and vocal loop artist with Midwest roots, a classically-trained violinist with an inner theater kid’s love of group choreography, and a student of Americana music with a theology degree hanging in their studio. They’ve been writing and touring their own autobiographical folk/pop music for over a decade, but their viral 2021 anthem “Plowshare Prayer” secured them a permanent place in hearts and households across the world, as well as a peculiar career as a veracious songsmith with an unshakeable pastoral presence. Charming and banter-heavy, Spencer’s live performances at theaters, listening rooms, church sanctuaries, backyards, folk festivals, spiritual conferences, and queer clubs keep diverse audiences laughing one moment and weeping the next.
